SAHANLAHTI

Sahanlahti is situated at the heart of the Saimaa lake
district, eight kilometres away from Puumala village.

Sahanlahti used to be the site of one of the oldest
sawmills in the Saimaa area. The last sawmill was
demolished in 1936 but life still goes on at Sahanlahti.
Elsa Heporauta, a well-known Finnish writer, was born
at Sahanlahti and spent her childhood in its scenic
surroundings. Elsa Heporauta is especially known as the
founder of Kalevala Koru, a renowned Finnish jewellery
manufacturer, and of the Kalevala Women’s Association.

A number of buildings dating back to the heyday of the
sawmill still proudly stand at Sahanlahti. These include
the present museum and its grounds, and the sawmill
manager’s house with its outbuildings. The new buildings
– the hotel, saunas and conference block – blend in
beautifully with their surroundings.

The restaurant is located in the sawmill manager’s house,
which is still the main building of Sahanlahti. In spring 2005,
a Kalevala Koru shop was opened at the restaurant in
honour of Elsa Heporauta.

Sahanlahti offers accommodation in a lakeside hotel,
holiday cottages and modest huts. Each form of
accommodation has its own attraction. The hotel and
holiday cottages are available all year round, making
Sahanlahti an attractive destination for a winter holiday.

Sahanlahti has three restaurants. The elegant manor-house gourmet restaurant, the medieval-style Pajapirtti restaurant and the cosy Rantamakasiini restaurant all have their own distinctive ambience.

The conference facilities at Sahanlahti include the standard-style Ilmari conference room and the Artturi conference room with an open fireplace. Both of them have a full range of modern conference equipment.

The surroundings of Sahanlahti offer opportunities for a wide variety of activities, including cycling, canoeing, tennis, picking wild berries and mushrooms, fishing and boating. To finish off the day, the sauna provides ultimate relaxation. Our traditional smoke sauna and other saunas are located right by the lake, making it easy to take a dip in between sessions in the sauna.

Sahanlahti is also an ideal destination for boaters. The sheltered marina can be safely entered even by a bigger boat. Besides boat moorings, the facilities of the marina include septic tank disposal and a service block.

Come and enjoy the scenic surroundings and friendly hospitality at Sahanlahti!
I wish you warmly wellcome!
